NAD+ & Detox

Why is detoxification essential in the human body?

Although the word “detox,” can trigger thoughts of juice cleanses and hard-to-follow protocols, detoxification refers to biological processes that are happening all of the time in order to eliminate waste. The body removes toxic byproducts of cellular metabolism and normal body functioning, along with environmental toxins that make their way into the body.

How does NAD+ help with drug abuse?

If you regularly experience one or more of these symptoms, it’s time to start paying attention to what your body is trying to say. By taking note of the way you feel, you can start reclaiming your wellness, making proactive choices and lifestyle changes that promote your ongoing health.

As a person abuses drugs and alcohol, their natural amount of NAD is depleted. This makes it more difficult for them to convert the energy that is broken down from food. It is even speculated that people who naturally produce less NAD are more likely to develop an addiction and potentially a co-occurring disorder. Other reasons the body’s natural reserve of NAD would be depleted are:

  • Post-traumatic stress
  • Anxiety
  • Depression
  • Chronic traumatic encephalopathy (CTE)
  • Alzheimer’s
  • Parkinson’s
  • Neurodegenerative diseases
  • Aging

All of these co-occurring disorders can drain one’s energy, and there are many ways to boost NAD in the body by exercising, eating vitamin-rich foods, fasting, eating protein, and eating raw foods. Many of these practices are introduced to people in treatment for substance abuse disorders (SAD). For instance, yoga and fitness centers are available to encourage healthy lifestyle practices, boost endorphins and will produce NAD. Dietary plans can include vitamin-rich foods to boost dopamine and can produce NAD in the brain. Most patients need roughly 6 to 10 days of infusion to feel effects. Oftentimes, as individuals enjoy the pleasant feelings, they are less inclined to abuse substances.

The NAD+ IV is important for the mitochondria, the powerhouses of our cells, to produce the energy our cells need. It functions as a coenzyme in the mitochondria, allowing the creation of chemical energy that our bodies can then use.

NAD+ is a very useful coenzyme and is utilized by many proteins in the human body, particularly the sirtuins, which repair DNA damage and are associated with healthy longevity in multiple species. In this way, NAD+ helps to combat genomic instability, one of the proposed nine reasons we age. Most cells contain the necessary repair systems to fix DNA damage. However, repairing this damage consumes NAD+, and if DNA damage becomes excessive, it can deplete the pool of NAD+ available and impact the other functions that require it.

Warning Signs of Needed Detox

Dehydration
  • Fatigue – One of the biggest indicators the body is working overtime to correct itself is persistent fatigue. Being sleepy on occasion or after a long week is one thing
  • but feeling groggy after a regular night’s sleep
  • wanting to nap throughout the day
  • or having irregular sleeping patterns is a sign it’s time to clean things up inside.
  • Infrequent bowel movements – The liver plays a key role in detoxification by identifying toxins and repackaging them in a way that allows them to passed along to the digestive system and eliminated from the body. Constipation is dangerous because those toxins stay in your body for longer than intended and can be reabsorbed into circulation instead of exiting through the bowels.
  • Inability to lose weight – If your midsection is growing
  • despite clean eating and regular exercise
  • it is a sign that what is coming into your body has surpassed what your body can use and effectively move out. Adipose tissue
  • otherwise known as “fat cells
  • ” tend to hold onto toxins. The body knows this and may declare it unsafe to breakdown the adipose tissue and release the toxins within
  • consequently making it more difficult to lose weight.
  • Skin issues – When the liver is overloaded and the body isn’t eliminating its toxins through normal pathways like daily bowel movements
  • it will seek alternative means to rid itself of those harmful substances. One such alternative way is through the skin. As our largest organ
  • the skin provides a very useful way to eliminate toxins through sweating and less favorable ways like rashes
  • rosacea
  • and eczema. These skin conditions
  • as well as foul body odor
  • can all be signs your skin is picking up the detoxing slack for the rest of your body.
  • Gallbladder problems – Often overlooked as unimportant
  • having gallbladder issues can be another sign your systems are out of balance
  • as this mighty little organ is considered the “right-hand man” of the liver. Poor digestion
  • pain in the right-hand side of your rib cage after eating
  • and gallstones are all major indicators your body is in need of repair.

Who Is At Risk?

Drug Addiction & Risk Factors

Anyone can get addicted, but the odds are higher for some people:

  • Peer pressure is a strong factor in starting to use and misuse drugs, particularly for young people. Lack of family involvement. Difficult family situations or lack of a bond with your parents or siblings may increase the risk of addiction, as can a lack of parental supervision. Early use.

  • Risk factors can influence drug abuse in several ways. The more risks a child is exposed to, the more likely the child will abuse drugs. Some risk factors may be more powerful than others at certain stages in development, such as peer pressure during the teenage years; just as some protective factors, such as a strong parent-child bond, can have a greater impact on reducing risks during the early years. An important goal of prevention is to change the balance between risk and protective factors so that protective factors outweigh risk factors.
